Green IT Products and Services for the Subcontinent

Conserving ecosystem and forest cover implies adopting right attitude to conserve energy resources and environment for a better use of technology, systems and factors impinging on our subsystem of economy. In the past, we have had a number of achievements to our credit where we have had the CHIPKO movement saving trees. Again a similar project, the green revolution produced significantly more better results in crop cultivation technology. Our value of technology embracing environment and efficient use of natural resources has made us venture into other outlook of the resource we generate and conserve.

5 'Green' Products That Aren't As Environmentally Friendly As You Thought

“Greenwashing” is a term that is starting to permeate the English lexicon. It's a form of marketing spin that is applied to products to make them more appealing to environmentally conscious consumers. It takes little to greenwash a product, sometimes changing a label to imply that it's more environmentally safe is all it takes. Other times, the true intent for a product may be green, but it still may fall short. There are plenty of products out there that actually have some eco-friendly qualities, but on closer look, they're not so environmentally friendly after all. Here's five that we've found.

5 'Green' Products That Aren't As Environmentally Friendly As You Thought
1. Rubber mulch. While recycling the rubber from tires is a critical environmental issue, the solution is not to shred them, dye them and then cover our flower beds and playgrounds with them. Health concerns have been documented in factory workers that are attributed to exposure to chemicals and dusts found in the manufacturing of tires. Use of the recycled tire shreds for home gardens involves repeated and direct exposure to the same particulates and chemicals. The dust released can be particularly troublesome for the lungs and it contains potent carcinogens.

Environment and Human Health, a non-profit health research group, compiled a summary of toxic actions brought on by ground up rubber tires, including neurotoxic responses, thyroid problems, allergic reactions, and developmental defects. You might be better off sticking to wood mulch, which will biodegrade more safely into your soil.

2. Biodegradable dog poop bags. The U.S.'s 78 million dogs produce more than 10 million tons of waste annually. And while nobody wants this stuff piling up on our streets and lawns, the way most of us dispose of dog poop might not be so well thought out.

Many dog waste bags, like BioBags, are made with plant cellulose and contain no polyethylene. But while it may be fully biodegradable when composted, the reality is that they'll probably end up in a landfill. And while the biodegradable bags will still deteriorate more quickly than plastic bags, that is not necessarily a good thing. In a landfill, the bag of poop will not compost; instead it will decompose in a manner that creates copious amounts of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that adds to global warming.

Composting dog waste is not such an outlandish idea, some cities have implemented such programs and the  Department of Agriculture has published guidelines for doing so. You can buy special composting systems specifically designed to handle animal waste.

3. Bamboo fabrics. When you hear that fabrics are made from regenerated, renewable sources like plant cellulose, you may think you're buying environmentally friendly duds. But bamboo can be much more of a couture fabric than a green one.

Bamboo may win you over as it is created from a quickly renewable plant that requires no fertilizers or pesticides, but the process for transforming bamboo into textiles can be energy and chemically intensive. The fabric is rendered by  cooking it in a mixture of lye and carbon disulfide or other caustic solvents, which is followed by a complex bleaching process. Moreover, the bamboo clothes you buy are likely processed in China where there are no laws to protect laborers and the environment from these harsh chemicals.

4. Ethanol fuel. What could be wrong with a renewable fuel source that helps us consume less oil? Well, a lot really.

First, there's the food vs. fuel question. Our farmlands are a fixed resource even as our population and food needs continue to grow. So, planting fields to produce biofuels, such as ethanol, means we will be dedicating less land to feeding people and reducing world hunger.

Next, there is the question of whether the ethanol really lowers carbon emissions. A recent studyby the journal Nature Climate Change and the University of Nebraska says no. The study concluded that corn-based ethanol contributes more to climate change than gasoline in the short term. When quantified how much carbon is dispersed into the atmosphere when corn residue is removed to make biofuel (instead of left on farm fields to replenish them with carbon), the study shows that ethanol didn't come close to meeting the government standards to qualify as a renewable fuel source (cellulosic biofuels must release 60% less carbon pollutants than gasoline to qualify).

5. Green cleaning products. Most conventional cleaning products use alcohol, chlorine, ammonia or petroleum-based solvents. Each can have negative effects on health and the environment, but they do clean well. Green cleaning products (like all-purpose cleaners, floor cleaners and dishwashing liquids) sound like a good alternative. They're mostly non-toxic, biodegradable and made from renewable resources... you'd think. One problem: not all of them clean so well, which means you have to use more to get the job done and buy more plastic packaging. Another problem: Terms like "natural," "environmentally friendly," and "non-toxic" found on packaging and in advertising are meaningless. Some green cleaners may have mislabeled ingredients and the third-party “eco labels” they tout may be dubious. They may, in fact, contain some of the toxins you don't want to use.

If you want to stay green when you clean, consider using less toxic, less expensive, and known products such as hydrogen peroxide (for sanitizing, stain removal and bleaching), tea tree oil and water (for mold removal and as a disinfectant), white vinegar (for cleaning glass, counters and tile), and borax (for toilets, bathtubs and sinks). These common household items work just as well as the high-end green cleaning products, if not better

Ways to Go Green

Ways to Go Green
Ways to Go Green
Ways to Go Green
Ways to Go Green
With time running out fast, it's high time we go beyond the Earth Day and the Environment Day celebrations, and inculcate some simple ways of going green in our day-to-day life.

While a large number of people out there realize that numerous environmental issues are already knocking on our door, only a few of them are actually trying to do something to save the planet. Going green seems to be the newest mantra in the crusade to save the Earth, and the biggest advantage of this concept is the fact that you can resort to some simple changes in your lifestyle and do your bit to save the environment. While the authorities try their best to come up with complex plans to curb these environmental issues, we can resort to these simple measures and reduce their intensity.

Go Green Facts

Before we move on, let's go through some interesting facts about green living.

  • If the American Solar Energy Society is to be believed, effectively harnessing the sunlight that falls on the planet for a minute can help in generating power which can meet the energy requirements of the planet for one whole year.
  • Other than saving 20 trees and 7,000 gallons of water, recycling one ton of paper can help in saving energy enough to power an average American house for six months.
  • If the target of 20 percent wind energy contribution to generate electricity in the United States is achieved by 2030, it would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by a whopping 25 percent.
  • Installing water-efficient appliances in homes can help in saving 3 trillion gallons of water and $18 billion every day in the United States alone.
  • While the population of the United States accounts for 5 percent of the world population, it has 20 percent share in greenhouse gases emission.

Effective Ways to Go Green

Eco-friendly living tips exist in plenty―right from having short showers to walking or cycling instead of using a car―and are quite effective in our crusade to save the planet. The best part about these simple tips is that they can be easily inculcated in your daily routine, without worrying much about how you will adjust to the new lifestyle.

  • Set your thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter and a few degrees higher in the summer.
  • Replace incandescent bulbs with energy-saving compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs).
  • If you take a bath or wash clothes in hot water, start using cold water for the same.
  • Similarly opt for short showers, instead of spending hours in the bathroom.
  • Try unplugging appliances to save energy at your home and workplace.
  • Never keep electronic appliances on standby.
  • Instead of using a car, try walking or cycling to work.
  • If possible resort to telecommuting instead of going to office.
  • If you have to use vehicle, drive efficiently and make sure that it is well maintained.
  • Encourage people in your neighborhood to plant trees.
  • If you are into gardening, chose native drought-tolerant plants for your garden.
  • Switch over to organic products instead of their conventional counterparts.
  • Start composting with the garbage that is produced in your home.
  • Instead of using plastic bags, resort to paper bags or cloth bags.
  • If you eat non-vegetarian food, try and cut down on non-vegetarian meal a week.
  • Resort to different ways to recycle paper, plastic, electronic goods, etc.
  • Subscribe for bills in e-format instead of paper.
  • Make use of alternative energy sources, such as wind and solar power.
  • Avoid buying bottled water, and if at all you do, make sure that you dispose the bottle properly.
  • And lastly, spread awareness about the benefits of green living.
There is no doubt about the fact that observing the Earth Day or Environment Day is the most effective tool of spreading awareness about the need to save our planet. When we say we need to go beyond these celebrations, we mean to say that we should do something more than just celebrating these days and forgetting the cause the very next moment.

On one hand, we can see the administration trying to get its environmental policies in place, while on the other, there exist examples of corporates going green. We, as individuals, seem to be the only ones who are left out in this bid to save the Earth and therefore, we have to join the bandwagon as soon as possible.

Problems with Going Green and How to Overcome Them

Before taking the plunge into a green lifestyle, you should know that there are problems with going green. We tell you how to overcome them so that you can weigh your options and choose wisely.

Problems with Going Green and How to Overcome Them

Problems with Going Green and How to Overcome Them
Problems with Going Green and How to Overcome Them

Go green! Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. Do your bit. Play your part. These are just some of the phrases we're constantly bombarded with, in our everyday life. Everyone thinks that everyone should be doing something about the dire straits that our environment is in, and the only solution anyone can come up with, unfortunately, is just one mantra: go green. Sure it makes us feel like we're being responsible citizens of the world and that we're ensuring, in our own little ways, that our future generations have a better ecosystem and a more healthy environment to thrive in than the one we've obviously managed to pillage and defile with such ease. But is it easy to actually 'go green'? Some may nod in agreement, some may shake their heads vehemently, disqualifying it as a viable way of life. Since everyone's making such a big deal about how awesome it is to go green, let's play the devil's advocate and see what kind of problems going green can pose, and some solutions (if any) to counter them.

What the Problem Is: Too Little Information

Honestly ask yourself: what does going green mean? Does it mean that you should stop using anything that has any kind of chemical substance in it? If yes, good luck with trying to live in the jungle. No high-speed Internet there, so whatchugonnado? Or does it mean that you have to give up on practices and products that lead to deforestation or unfavorable use of rapidly depleting natural resources. Yes? Well, how, may we ask, will you reach work if not for your car or even the very efficient public transport system in your city. You'll walk or cycle? Ummm, know a road or bike that isn't made of chemicals? We can go on with such questions, but we'll never get a definite answer. Why? Because there isn't one.

No one really knows what exactly going green entails, so everyone just formulates their own version of how to feel a little less guilty about the environment and decides to proclaim it as going green. Now we're not saying that the effort isn't laudable. We're just saying if you have the passion and the drive to come up with ideas, why not take it on as a worldwide movement without having to worry about the money or sustainability part of it? Any answers?

What the Solution Could be.

Research. Do as much research as you can about the different and various meanings that going green has been attributed with over the years, pick one that seems the most doable by you, and follow it. The best part is, no one knows why they're doing what they're doing, so the chances of you doing it wrong aren't very high.

What the Problem Is: Too Much Information

Don't be surprised. While there's too little information about what going green is, it is also true that there's so much of it, in bits, fragments, and pieces. One gets so overwhelmed that he can't help but begin doubting that the whole concept is nothing but urban legend. You're supposed to recycle plastic, but only some types can be. You're supposed to use solar energy for electricity, but there's hardly any sunlight where you live. You should stick to cloth grocery shopping bags, but aren't they made from plants, which are green too? So, does that mean that in order to protect plants, you've to make bags out of them? All these seem too ridiculous to you, don't they? Give it some time, and you'll realize you have similar questions, but no answers.

What the Solution Could be.

The best solution we can dare to offer to this obviously subjective conundrum is: pick a side or remain neutral. You make your decision based on what makes most sense to you: the arguments for or against going green. If you truly believe that everything that is being said about going green will hold true under any circumstance, you've already decided that it's worth it. If you're more confused than convinced, then first of all, join the club, and next, refrain from making any major lifestyle change until you truly are convinced. Why? Coming up next!

What the Problem Is: It Costs the Earth (pun unintended).

Going green poses another problem that no one really advertises next to those glossy green posters: it is an extremely expensive way to live. At least for the middle or earning class. If it's so great to live green, why can't affordable products and practices that encourage it be made so that this class can benefit from it too? They comprise the majority of the world population, so why does a hybrid car that runs on renewable energy cost almost a third more than its regular, gas-run counterpart? Why is solar energy so much more expensive than conventional electricity? Because we haven't reached a stage where it is feasible to reduce prices without covering production costs. But then, aren't we supposed to be talking about the bigger picture, and NOT be worrying about trivial things like profit margins?

What the Solution Could be
Rethink your decision. Make a financial plan. Calculate if you're going to be able to sustain a living while you attempt to sustain the environment. Don't do it just because it's in vogue. Consider all the lifestyle changes you'll have to make to accommodate this way of living, and make an informed decision

Swiss aviation pioneers Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg just took an important step toward their 2015 goal of flying around the world on a solar-powered aircraft with the successful maiden flight of the Solar Impulse 2. Professional test pilot Marcus Scherdel took the cockpit of the single-seater aircraft at Payerne Airport in Switzerland and lifted off at approximately 5:36 this morning Central European Time (CET) for a 2 hour and 17 minute flight that climbed to an altitude of 5,500 feet (1,670 meters) before returning to Payerne.

“This inaugural flight is an important stage — a step closer towards the round-the-world flight. It is also a huge emotional step for the entire team and all our partners who have worked on the aircraft,” said Borschberg, Solar Impulse co-founder, CEO and pilot. This was the first of several test flights the Solar Impulse 2 team will undertake in the next few months in order for the experimental aircraft to earn certification.

Last year the first Solar Impulse successfully flew across the United States from San Francisco to New York City and with their upgraded version, Borschberg and company founder, president and pilot Piccard want to prove that a solar-powered airplane can fly long-range flights both during the day and at night without using fuel and polluting emissions. Solar Impulse 2 is made of carbon fiber with a 72 meter wingspan and a weight of 2,300 Kg. The airplane features 17,000 solar cells on the wings which supply four electric motors with renewable energy from the sun. Night flights are made possible because of lithium ion batteries that are recharged during the day using the solar cells.
Solar Impulse isn’t the only company working on fuel-free clean energy aviation. Solar Flight’s Sunseeker Duo is the fastest solar-powered two-seater airplane in the world and is currently testing in Italy with the goal of passenger flights this summer.

*******************************************************************************************************************************

Solar Impulse is the only airplane of perpetual endurance, able to fly day and night on solar power, without a drop of fuel.

The chances of succeeding at the first attempt to build a solar airplane capable of flying around the world were judged to be slim, so a more rudimentary prototype, HB-SIA, was first constructed. Lessons learned from this prototype are incorporated in Solar Impulse 2, the Round-The-World Solar Airplane.

#DISCOVERSI2

This revolutionary single-seater aircraft made of carbon fiber has a 72 meter wingspan (larger than that of the Boeing 747-8I) for a weight of just 2,300 Kg, equivalent to that of a car.
The 17,000 solar cells built into the wing supply four electric motors (17.5 CV each) with renewable energy.
During the day, the solar cells recharge lithium batteries weighing 633 Kg (2077 lbs.) which allow the aircraft to fly at night and therefore to have virtually unlimited autonomy.

The Amazon Rainforest Resources

Eco Friendly Industrial LiquidWe have all heard about the Amazon rainforest, probably since childhood. This rainforest has been harvested for wood, hunted for exotic animals, preyed upon by land developers and strip mall owners, and generally stripped of its natural beauty and splendor over the past sixty years.
The resources of the Amazon rainforest are not unlimited, however. You see, we need to be able to either replenish it or stop stripping it, either one, so that it may retain its majestic mysteries within it.
People who have had private tours through this area have commented on how huge the exotic animals are, from snakes to insects to tigers to lions. They have gloried in how large everything is and how much they enjoyed the dark, mysterious abyss of the rainforest ahead of them, particularly at night.
These resources must not be squandered, however. It is really important to always have enough to go around, and that means enough exotic monkeys and eucalyptus trees. Yes, we said it.
When you are looking to improve your world, remember the Amazon rainforest and think about ways to really make all of your resources perform double duty for you and your business. That is why it is a really good idea to look at the chemical solutions that we put out. Our environmental cleaning products, like our toilet bowl cleaner, radiator cleaner, and glass cleaner, are all eco friendly and safe for the environment. All of us are really hoping to bring these environmentally friendly liquids to all parts of the world, but for now we provide them to Australia and select countries. If your business is going green, then think about ways in which you can become a part of this movement by looking through our website and viewing the information on the individual product pages. That is the most important thing: educating yourself on what a difference these solutions will make in your business. Now that you’ve decided to make the most of your resources, call up Envirosafe Solutions today and place your order

The Green Bug

Eco FriendlyWhen you catch a bug, it means that you have caught some sort of parasitic sickness. Of course, it is often used in colloquial speech to indicate catching the “fever” of doing something about which we are really passionate. Catching the green bug means that you have become totally enthralled with eco friendly sustainability and wish to make a large chunk of your life devoted to the care, protection and sustainability of our beautiful earth.
At Envirosafe Solutions, we have already caught the green bug. All of our chemical solutions are planet safe and eco friendly, and you can even verify the level of product ecology and septic safety by looking at the product pages on our website. We are really proud of what we have accomplished, and we know that it is no laughing matter when you devote yourself seriously to the study of ecology.
There was a time when eco friendly initiatives were not very popular. However, society as a whole caught the green bug and people became very aware of the safety of the planet, whether they wanted to or not! It all has to do with how information, trends, and shopping epidemics spread throughout the world. It is considered “cool” to be green, but that was not always the case. In fact, many people found it to be annoying and irksome to listen to the initial pioneers into this field of research. However, celebrities have adopted green practices and have made both themselves and eco friendly products that much more popular.
Everyone loves someone who cares, and celebrities have used this for self promotion but also to spread the green bug globally, not just in isolated areas.
When Envirosafe Solutions began our quest to bring environmental cleaning products to the world, catching the green bug was not quite as popular as it is today, but fortunately we knew that everyone would soon be very informed about the sustainability of the world. Toilet bowl cleaner, sanitiser, and porta-loo treatment are all available in eco friendly forms on our website. We highly recommend our solvent free degreaser and our Extreme Green line of products.

Solar Paired With Energy Storage Scores a Regulatory Win in California.

Small energy storage now exempt from interconnection fees and review—another step toward California’s storage goals.

Eric Wesoff, Jeff St. John
May 21, 2014

Adding an energy storage system to a NEM-eligible solar system or generator in California just became a little easier and more transparent under a new Public Utility Commission ruling.
Last month, Jeff St. John reported on the schism between utilities and the solar industry when it comes to how best to integrate energy storage. California’s big three investor-owned utilities -- Southern California Edison, Pacific Gas & Electric and San Diego Gas & Electric -- have been demanding that energy storage systems undergo reviews costing between $1,400 and $3,700 in extra fees. Utilities claimed the review was needed for safety reasons, as well as to make sure that consumers don't game the system; storing grid power and then feeding it back under the guise of green, net-metered power.
In a recent public address, SolarCity CEO Lyndon Rive insisted, "There is no extra complexity in interconnecting" a PV system with storage versus just a PV system. At another recent forum, Rive noted that customer interconnect for SolarCity's energy storage system was taking an average of eight months.
CPUC President Mike Peevey publicly said that changes were afoot to remove these obstacles.
Jigar Shah commented on the recent Rive-Musk-Peevey discussion, "This was fantastic theater to force Chairman Peavey to finally rule against his friends at the utility companies. This is the beginning of the end for the utilities." (Shah might be engaging in a bit of hyperbole.)
In any case, last month, California's utility regulators issued a proposed decision that was a rebuke to utilities and a boon for hundreds of stalled battery-backed solar PV projects in California. Storage and solar advocates had been anticipating a ruling that supports a more streamlined, no-cost solution.
And as of last week, the final ruling is in (here's a link to the full document [PDF]). The decision doesn’t give the distributed generation industry all it wants -- but it removes some significant obstacles.
Here are the basic provisions:
  • Systems larger than 10 kilowatts will require a separate meter for measuring the interplay of battery-charging and solar generation at a cost capped at $600. (The cap doesn't apply to projects requiring complex metering solutions.)
  • Systems smaller than 10 kilowatts will use an estimation for NEM derating
  • The decision directs that exemption from standby charges, interconnection application and review fees for NEM-paired storage would be tested on a provisional basis for systems connecting by December 31, 2015
  • NEM-paired storage systems with storage devices larger than 10 kilowatts shall have a maximum output power no larger than 150 percent of the NEM generator's maximum output capacity
“We’re very encouraged by the proposed decision having no application fees, and having the costs of the meters capped,” said Peter Rive, SolarCity's COO, in an interview. Given that SolarCity already monitors each individual installation at the meter and at the inverter, “I don’t think a meter is necessary at all -- but we’re moving things forward,” he said.
As for the finality of this ruling, Will Craven, Sr. Public Affairs Manager at SolarCity, commented, "Procedurally, parties can offer comment on the decision that could then potentially re-open proceedings, but for all intents and purposes, this is it."
